Recently, Tesla said that at present, relying on China's perfect supply chain system and first-class manufacturing capacity, the localization rate of parts and components has reached 95% in less than 4 years, and more than 400 local first-tier suppliers have been signed.

According to industry statistics, at least 93 of the more than 400 suppliers are listed companies. Among them, 12 suppliers provide Tesla with body systems related to body structure, doors, body molds, seat side panels and other related materials and components; There are 10 interior suppliers and 4 exterior suppliers who have provided Tesla with high-quality interior and exterior trim parts; Six suppliers provide Tesla's chassis systems, including electric power steering, braking systems, suspension systems and other related materials and components; There are 18 suppliers that provide Tesla with key components such as high-voltage cables, charging cables, charging cables, charging guns, and superchargers for charging facilities; There are 10 suppliers that provide Tesla with electric drive and electronic control systems, including motors, motor drive modules and motor controllers (such as IGBT power semiconductor modules) and other related materials and components; There are 22 suppliers that provide Tesla with cockpit systems, covering advanced perception and control technologies such as perception systems, autonomous driving systems, and central control systems; There are 34 suppliers that provide Tesla with power battery systems, including lithium batteries, battery management systems, battery thermal management systems and other related materials and components.

In addition, the relevant information also shows that Tesla has successfully obtained the software registration from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and after the software update of the employee test vehicle, the words "Employee FSDBeta Edition Plan: Registered" appeared on the screen, which will pave the way for Tesla to test Full Self-Driving (FSD) internally, Tesla employees can test on China's public roads, and after the test, it will be upgraded and pushed to Chinese users in the next few months. At present, Tesla's cooperation with the latest version of Baidu Maps V20 includes 4 versions of basic version, 3D leading version, 3D flagship version, and SR intelligent driving version, and Baidu Maps V20 can achieve 3D lane-level navigation, traffic light countdown, real-time navigation at intersections, camera reminders, line reminders, bus lane reminders, speeding reminders, etc. Tesla has won the trust of more than 1.7 million consumers in China and more than 6 million car owners worldwide.

Tesla's cumulative deliveries in 2023 will reach 947,000 vehicles, more than 50% of Tesla's global deliveries.

Despite this, it is reported that due to heightened geopolitical uncertainty, Tesla has asked suppliers to start producing parts outside Chinese mainland and Taiwan as early as next year. Suppliers claiming to make components such as printed circuit boards, displays and electronic control unit systems for Tesla models sold outside of China have received requests from the U.S. electric vehicle maker. Tesla discussed the matter with other Asian suppliers from Japan, South Korea and elsewhere.

For many customers, including Tesla, the so-called strategy to avoid China also includes avoiding Taiwan, so many of Tesla's suppliers are considering increasing production capacity in Thailand and Vietnam. Previously, Thai media also reported that Tesla was looking for an industrial park with a station area of more than 2,000 acres.

Other U.S. automakers, such as General Motors and Ford, have asked suppliers to look into moving electronics production outside of Chinese mainland and Taiwan, but Tesla has yet to make a formal request.

The U.S. government announced on May 14 that it would impose additional taxes on $18 billion worth of Chinese imports, including electric vehicles, batteries, solar cells, and steel and aluminum. It was followed by an announcement to impose a 100% tariff on electric vehicles imported from China from August 1, 2024. In addition, from January 1 next year, a 50% tariff will be imposed on Chinese semiconductor products.
